I tried this heater thinking that it would work in a room with high ceilings and that it did not. I had it on high for an hour and there was no temperature change in the room and I didn’t even feel much of anything standing next to it. I am very disappointed in this because of all of the other reviews given on it here and at [. . . ]. If you need to heat a bigger space that has tall ceilings then keep looking because this one does not work.

I bought two of these heaters at Costco for about $[. . . ] each. I was hoping that I could heat the two rooms we spend the most time in more efficiently and effectively rather than using our whole-house forced-air furnace. So, I turned off my furnace and used only the space heaters. This was such a big mistake as I discovered when, after using the heaters for a month, I got my first PG&E (our gas and electric utility company) bill. My bill, which normally runs about $450/month in the winter went up to $825! When I called PG&E to see what could have caused our bill to almost double, they asked me if we were using electric room-size heaters. I said yes and they told me that the space heaters were the reason. They are not cost-effective and since they are electric, cost much more to operate than running our gas furnace. Upon hearing this, I immediately returned the space heaters to Costco. Fortunately, Costco has a fantastic return policy, and I was able to get a full refund. The clencher is, the first sentence in Amazon’s product description for this item starts with, “A great money-saving alternative to heating the entire home. . . ” Beware of using these heaters as a replacement for whole-house gas furnaces. They do a great job warming large rooms I will admit, but at a high price. If you do decide to get one, use it very sparingly or you will be sorry when your electric bill arrives. Live and learn.

This space heater by Bionaire has worked very well for me–and this is its second winter doing a tour of duty to keep my bedroom warm! With the price of home heating going sharply higher these days, I have saved a good deal of money with this reliable, light weight portable space heater. I may not understand what “Micathermic” actually means; but I do know it works great!
Setup is a breeze–all you essentially have to do is place the (almost) flat panel heater into the two legs that act as bases to keep the heater upright. Then just plug it in and it should work rather economically. For the sake of safety, keep water and other electrical cords and objects away from this and, if you can, close any door to the room this is heating for the maximum effect. The temperature gauge is very easy to operate; just turn the knob one way or the other and you can easily control the degree to which the heater heats the area.
They say that if it tips over it turns itself off automatically; but I cannot comment on this because this has never happened to my heater–at least not yet! The bases on which the heater rests are made of very sturdy plastic. There is a five year warranty but I doubt you’ll need to use it–keep the instructions with the way to contact Bionaire just in case.
My only concern is that so many brands of space heaters might overheat when left on during the night. I would turn it off before going to bed. I know Bionaire advertises that it will automatically turn off if the machine tips over; but I still recommend turning it off at night just to be sure.
Overall, I can’t say anything truly negative about this space heater. Bionaire may call this a “Micathermic” type of heater and use even more fancy jargon but it’s essentially a well-made space heater that saves you a good amount of money on those awful winter home heating bills. I highly recommend this reliable product and I doubt you’ll be disappointed. The price is higher than some other space heaters but it’s worth it.

I purchased this heater from Costco during the 08-09 Winter, and am so pleased with my purchase. It is used to heat a fairly large basement that gets little of the house’s heat. This heater is silent, with no blowing fans or motors (some users mention a gentle “click” that can be heard when the unit turns on or off, but you’d have to be really listening for it). The biggest selling point for me is that it does not have ANY toxic heater smell, common to many space heaters. I have severe chemical sensitivities and have been absolutely fine being around this heater. I strongly recommend this heater, and hope that it is back in the warehouses (for around $60) and online for the upcoming winter as I hope to purchase 2 more exactly like it.
I highly recommend placing it outside on high for a few hours the first time you use it to burn off any residues left from the manufacturing process. Also, if it has not been used for several weeks or months, I turn it on high and put it outside for a few hours to burn off any dust that has settled on it, as this can cause some burning odors at first. After doing those things, mine has absolutely no detectable odor.
The quibbles are minor: the red “on” light can be distracting, and I covered it with black tape — do not do this in an area where little ones or other people may not be aware it is on (the grate does get very warm, not scorching though). There is no timer or thermostat and is a no frills heater, just providing nice even heat, so just be aware of that before purchase.
